February 13, 1925 - June 2, 2022
Nancy A. Persons, 87, longtime Westminster resident, passed away peacefully after a short illness Thursday, June 2, 2022. She was born February 13, 1945, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to loving parents, Dale and Francis Roush. She graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1953 and attended the University of Colorado–Boulder, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation she married Dayton S. Persons. She subsequently joined him on the island of Guam, where he was stationed as a Navy pilot. Nancy was a schoolteacher there from 1957-1959. They returned stateside in 1959 and purchased a home in Westminster, later divorcing in 1974. Nancy was a charter member of the United Methodist Church of Westminster. She worked as a librarian and administrator in varying roles, including elementary school principal, at Adams County School District 50, and was a charter member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter HX. A lifelong learner, she put herself through graduate school and earned her master’s degree in Library Science in 1973, and her Principal Certificate in 1995. She worked at Hodgkins Elementary School, Ranum High School, FM Day Elementary School, and Vista Grande Elementary School. She dedicated 22 1/2 years to education before retiring. Nancy was a loving mother and grandmother and a wonderful person who touched the hearts of many. She cherished time spent with family and friends, especially visiting over coffee or a glass of wine. Nancy’s smile was always welcoming, and she was a ray of sunshine to everyone she met. Given her love of history, she became a tour guide at the Molly Brown House. She also became an advocate for the Funeral Consumer Society for many years and was invited to speak for a PBS special. She thoroughly enjoyed her retirement years, including cultural activities with family and friends such as visiting museums, the Denver Symphony, and shows at the Denver Center for Performing Arts and the Arvada Center. Her favorite activity was playing bridge in several bridge groups, and she cherished the many friends she made through the years. Nancy was an avid gardener, enjoyed playing golf, and loved to travel. Her golfing highlight was visiting The Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. She travelled throughout the United States as well as to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Central America, and Nova Scotia. Her travels included multiple cruises, including a cruise to the Panama Canal. Nancy was a wonderful hostess and often welcomed friends to her beautiful home for bridge events and garden parties. And she loved having her family gather at her home for all types of occasions. We all deeply miss Nancy and her smile, her laugh, and charming wit. Survivors include Nancy’s daughter Linda Fischer and husband Kerry, her son Dayton Persons and wife Paula, her sister, Sue Lorenzo, and niece JoAnn Blackford and husband David. Nancy also had five grandchildren of whom she was very proud: Derek Fischer, Sarah Fischer and husband Mark Mann, Travis Fischer and partner Amelia Merrill, Kaleb Persons, and Mark Persons. There will be a Life Celebration on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, 10am-1pm at Westminster Christian Church, 3575 W. 96th Ave, Westminster, CO 80031. Cards can be sent to: Persons Family, PO Box 350716, Westminster, CO 80035. Memorial gifts may be given in her honor to the Molly Brown House or the Arvada Art Center.
